Peter Barkwill, chief executive of a local quarry company, has been voted as the new president of the Mid-Somerset Show.
Mr Barkwill, who has worked for the John Wainwright & Co Ltd since 1985, was voted in at the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society’s recent Annual General Meeting on Monday 6th March and joins the local show in its 165th year.
Speaking about his appointment he said: “I’m delighted to take on the role of President for the 2017 Mid-Somerset Show. Like Wainwright, its history stretches back to the 19th century, yet it is firmly grounded in the contemporary world.
“I greatly admire the show’s values and look forward to seeing local businesses, landowners and farmers come together, with the public, to celebrate our region’s rural identity.”
Since joining John Wainwright & Co Ltd, Peter has driven significant growth in the business, including a multi-million-pound investment at Wainwright’s Moons Hill Quarry near Shepton Mallet.
This year’s award-winning show takes place on Sunday 20th August 2017 and will include the return of the Scurry Driving, the Sheep Show and our very popular vintage field. New this year is a falconry on horseback display by Jonathan Marshall in the main arena.
