Shepton Mallet set the sky alight to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday 21st April.

Local people were invited to the free beacon-lighting ceremony on the Mid-Somerset Showfield.

The event was part of a chain of beacon lightings happening up and down the UK. Towns and parishes across the UK were invited to take part to celebrate the monarch’s milestone birthday which simultaneously saw Her Majesty lighting the principal beacon at Windsor Castle.

Hosted by the organisers of the annual Mid-Somerset Agricultural Show, the event was a great success with about 500 people coming along to enjoy the evening. There was a hog roast and plenty of cider, alongside a special parade from the Shepton Mallet Lantern Team and a performance of Happy Birthday and God Save the Queen by a few local musicians.
