Society AGM Report
14/12/2009, 12.23pm

The Society AGM was held in the Pilton Village Hall on Monday 02 March 2009.

Michael Eavis CBE was elected to be President of the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society for the second time. Michael said he was pleased to be of help to the show as he thoroughly enjoyed his year as President in 2007.

Roger Eddy stood down from the chair, having been chairman for 10 years and Mr Ian Harvey, Managing Director of Framptons Ltd was elected as the successor.

Roger Eddy said the last ten years has seen a revival in the show’s fortunes with a three to four fold increase in its attendance on the third Sunday in August. This success is due to a number of factors, obviously the policy of free entry for pedestrians has had a major effect but this would not have been possible without the generous support of many local businesses, particularly Haskins, Gaymers Cider, Tesco, Brothers Drinks, Framptons, Glastonbury Festivals and many others.

Looking forward, he said that the show faces a number of challenges and the recession will have a major effect on its viability. Future development in Shepton Mallet is in consultation stage, if ground currently used by the show is needed for development the show will have to re-locate. This should not be seen as a threat but more of an opportunity and it is positive that Ian Harvey is the right man to lead the Society and the show forward. Mr Harvey’s knowledge of local business and in particularly the food industry is second to none and will be put to good use for the benefit of the show.
