A sizable crowd came to North Wootton on Thursday evening to witness the second Orchard Wassail organised by the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society. Local historian Alan Stone provided a number of explanations for the history of the wassailing tradition. The Wassail Queen, local resident Lottie Gordon lit the bonfire and later wetted the roots of the cider apple tree with some 2011 made cider. She also placed toast in the tree before gunman Wessex Purchase fired his muzzle loaded gun, all of which is to encourage a good crop of cider apples in the coming year. The Wassail held in 2011 was obviously successful as the result last year was a record crop of cider apples in the area.
Nick Marsh, from Denela’s bakery provided early evening sustenance with a hog roast.
The evening continued with entertainment in the village hall provided by Trevor Hoddinott and Home Grown, the Langport Mummers and the Beetle Crushers a local Clog Dancing group. Local cider, mulled or cold and apple juice was available all evening and a cheese ploughman’s supper kept hunger away.
The next Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society event will be the Hedge Laying Competiton on 26th February. LINK for information >
